Rosti Malaysia – a technology-led engineered plastics and contract manufacturing business

Rosti - Malaysia

2019 was a record year for new business awards carried out at Rosti Malaysia, which is part of the successful, technology-driven contract manufacturer Rosti Group, owned by the €11 billion Swedish Nordstjernan conglomerate. Rosti Malaysia has additional available capacity in 2020 and welcomes new opportunities for companies seeking world-class plastic injection molding and contract manufacturing.

“Responding to the wants and needs of our customers has moved Rosti Malaysia significantly upstream in our customers’ supply chain. We’ve transformed from a value-add molding organization to a full contract manufacturing partner offering complete product design services—a truly technologically advanced partner.”  – Pat Williams, SVP Asia

Rosti Malaysia, based in Johor, was established in 2012 to support an existing customer’s manufacturing needs in the region. A change in the customer’s manufacturing strategy meant that some products manufactured by Rosti in Northern Asia needed to be moved to Malaysia.

This process was far from simple because the product in question had a significant supply chain, and in the early days of production, the entire BOM came from outside Malaysia. During this period, the team localized 280 components across six main commodities (PCBA, motors, steel shafts, rubber rollers, sheet metal, and cable harnesses). The objective was to simplify the complexity and deliver value by localizing at the point of manufacture. A localization program was launched utilizing Rosti’s supply chain management expertise, and the result was a multi-commodity ecosystem that reduced business risk. In doing so, a much more sustainable supply chain was established, which now benefits all customers at Rosti Malaysia.

A major contributor to this transformation has been the company’s approach to innovation, which has enabled Rosti to 3D print injection molding tools. 3D printing continues to advance, and Rosti is giving customers the confidence to push the boundaries with their designs and the ability to physically test molded parts at a fraction of traditional lead times. This is essential to remain agile in the development cycle, where flexibility is critical to success. Customers can now have prototype parts in their hands (injection molded) from production-intent material within 72 hours.

The Johor facility is equipped with state-of-the-art Sumitomo Demag injection molding machines and a fully controlled, ESD-protected assembly area, further enhancing Rosti’s highly specialized capabilities to support all its customers’ needs. The world-class manufacturing facility—along with world-class supply chain management, product design, and 72-hour prototyping services—has provided Rosti with a significant boost, allowing it to deliver greater value to customers through reduced costs and faster time to market.

The value proposition that Rosti offers—including design, engineering, and supply chain management enhanced by its innovation lab—has made Rosti Malaysia attractive to a diverse range of end customers from the automotive, medical, and consumer electronics markets.
